In Meselson and Stahl's experiments, heavy $DNA$ was distinguished from normal $DNA$ by centrifugation in $CsCl$ gradient. When $DNA$ is mixed with caesium chloride it will settle down at a particular height in centrifugation and heavier one higher up.
