A person earns $15 \%$ on investment but loses $10 \%$ on another investment. If the ratio of the two investments be $3: 5,$ what is the gain or loss on the two investments taken together in $\%$?
A
$0.625$
B
$0.8$
C
$0.9$
D
$1.2$
Solution
Let the investments be Rs. $3 x$ and $R$ s. $5 x$
Then total investment $=8 x$
Total receipt $=115 \%$ of $3 x+90 \%$ of $5 x$
$=115 \times \frac{3 x}{100}+90 \times \frac{5 x}{100}=7.95 x$
Loss $=C P-S P=8 x-7.95 x=0.05 x$
$\operatorname{loss} \%=0.05 x \times \frac{100}{8 x}=0.625 \%$
