A satellite revolves in the geostationary orbit but in a direction east to west. The time interval between its successive passing about a point on the equator is ........ $hrs$
A
$48$
B
$24 $
C
$12$
D
never
Solution
For a geostationary satellite $\mathrm{T}=24 \mathrm{hrs} \Rightarrow \omega_{s}=\frac{2 \pi}{24}=\frac{\pi}{12}$
Similarly for angular velocity of earth $\omega_{e}=\frac{\pi}{12}$
Relative angular velocity $\omega_{r}=\omega_{e}+\omega_{s}=\frac{\pi}{12}+\frac{\pi}{12}=\frac{\pi}{6}$
Relative $\mathrm{T}=T_{r}=\frac{2 \pi}{\omega_{r}}=\frac{2 \pi}{\frac{\pi}{6}}=12 \mathrm{hrs}$
