Assertion : Galvanised iron does not rust.
Reason : Zinc has a more negative electrode potential than iron.
A
If both Assertion and Reason are correct and the Reason is a correct explanation of the Assertion.
B
If both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not a correct explanation of the Assertion.
C
If the Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect.
D
If both the Assertion and Reason are incorrect.
(AIIMS-2017)
Solution
Zinc metal which has a more negative electrode potential than iron will provide electrons in preference of the iron, and therefore corrodes first. Only when all the zinc has been oxidised, the iron start to rust.
