In the hexaploid wheat, the haploid $(n)$ and basic $(x)$ numbers of chromosomes are
A
$n = 21$ and $x = 21$
B
$n = 21$ and $x = 14$
C
$n = 21$ and $x = 7$
D
$n = 7$ and $x = 21.$
(AIPMT-2007)
Solution
(c) : Hexaploid wheat is a result of allopolyploidy induced by doubling the chromosome number of the hybrid produced by crossing two different plants. In hexaploid wheat Triticale $2n = 6x = 42$. So $x$ stands for basic chromosome number and $n$ for haploid chromosome number. So, $n = 21$ and $x = 7$ for hexaploid wheat.
