4.Average
medium
The batting aterage for $40$ innings of a cricketer is $50$ nuns. His highest score exceeds his lowest score by $172$ runs. If these two innings are excluded, the average of the remaining $38$ innings is $48$ runs. The highest score of the player is
A
$165$
B
$170$
C
$172$
D
$174$
Solution
Let the cricketer's highest score $=x$ runs
$\therefore$ Minimum score $=(x-172)$ runs
$\therefore$ Total runs scored in 40 innings $=40 \times 50=2000$ runs
Total runs scored in $38$ innings $=38 \times 48=1824$ runs Now, according to the question, $x+x-172=2000-1824=176$
$\Rightarrow 2 x=176+172=348$
$\therefore \quad x=\frac{348}{2}=174$
