General Principles and processes of Isolation of Elements
easy
The electrolysis of pure alumina is not feasible because
A
it is bad conductor of electricity and its fusion temperature is high
B
it is volatile in nature
C
it is decomposed when fused
D
it is amphoteric
Solution
The electrolysis of pure alumina is not feasible because it is bad conductor of electricity and its fusion temperature is high.
Cryolite and fluorspar is added to alumina which lowers the fusion temperature to $1140 K$ and makes alumina good electrical conductor. Then, the electrolysis of fusion mixture is carried out.
