7.Profit and Loss
hard
The marked price of a watch was $Rs.\, 720 .$ A man bought the same for $Rs.\, 550.80$ after getting two successive discounts, the first being $10 \% .$ What was the second discount rate? (in $\%$)
A
$12$
B
$14$
C
$15$
D
$18$
Solution
Total discount $=\frac{720-550.80}{720} \times 100$
$=\frac{169.20}{720} \times 100=\frac{16920}{720}=23.5 \%$
Given first discount $=10 \%$
Let second discount be $x \%$
$\therefore \quad\left(-10-x+\frac{10 x}{100}\right) \%=23.5 \%$
i.e. $\quad x-\frac{x}{10}=23.5-10=13.5$
or $\quad \frac{9}{10} x=13.5$
or $x=13.5 \times \frac{10}{9}=15 \%$
