The metal for which, its property of formation of volatile complex is taken in account for its extraction is
Cobalt
Nickel
Vanadium
Iron
Solution
The metal which forms a volatile compound is nickel and it is extracted by taking advantage of this property. This process is called as vapour phase refining in which metal is converted to a volatile compound while the impurities remain unaffected. The compound formed, later on, decomposes on heating to give pure metal.
In the case of nickel, it is heated in a steam of carbon monoxide to form volatile nickel carbonyl $Ni ( CO )_4$. This on thermal decomposition at higher temperature $(450-470\, K )$ gives a pure nickel.
$Ni ( s )+4 CO ( g ) \rightarrow Ni ( CO )_4( g ) \rightarrow Ni ( s )+4 CO ( g )$
This refining of $Ni$ is called as Mond process.
