(a) The cells of collenchyma contain protoplasm and are living without intercellular spaces. When sclerenchyma consist of thick-walled dead cells.
In the beginning the cells are living and have protoplasm but due to deposition of impermeable secondary walls $(lignin)$ they become dead, thick and hard.
