In follicular phase secretion of gonadotropin hormones, $LH$ and $FSH$ increases gradually, stimulates follicular development and secretion of estrogen. Rapid secretion of $LH$ leading to its maximum level during the mid cycle ($14$th day) induces rapture of graafian follicle and ovum is released. The remaining part of Graafian follicle transforms into corpus luteum. The corpus luteum secretes large amount of progesterena which is essential for maintenance of endometrium.
