General Principles and processes of Isolation of Elements
medium
In the extraction of copper, its sulphide ore is heated in a reverberatory furnace after mixing with silica to :
A
separate $CuO$ as $CuSiO _3$
B
remove calcium as $CaSiO _3$
C
decrease the temperature needed for roasting of $Cu _2 S$
D
remove $FeO$ as $FeSiO _3$
(JEE MAIN-2023)
Solution
The copper ore contains iron, it is mixed with silica before heating in reverberatory furnace. $FeO$ slags off as $FeSiO _3$.
$FeO + SiO _2 \longrightarrow FeSiO _3$
