6-2.Equilibrium-II (Ionic Equilibrium)
medium

A

$AgCl$ અને $PbCrO_4$

B

$AgI$ અને $Ag_2CO_3$

C

$AgCl$ અને $Ag_2CO_3$

D

$Ag_2CO_3$ અને $AgI$

(AIIMS-2016)

Solution

The solubility equilibrium for $AgI$ is

$AgI(aq) \rightleftharpoons A{g^ + }(aq) + {I^ – }(aq);$

${K_{sp}} = [A{g^ + }][{I^ – }]$

Let solubility of $AgI$ be $S$ moles per litre,

$[A{g^ + }] = S,\,[{I^ – }] = S$

${K_{sp}} = [A{g^ + }][{I^ – }]$

$1 \times {10^{ – 16}} = (S) \times (S) = {S^2}$

$S = {(1 \times {10^{ – 16}})^{1/2}} = 1 \times {10^{ – 8}}$

On calculating solubility of all given compounds

Compound Solubility
$AgCl$ $1 \times 10^{-5}$
$AgI$ $1 \times 10^{-8}$
$PbCrO_3$ $2 \times 10^{-7}$
$Ag_2CO_3$ $1.26 \times 10^{-4}$

$\therefore $ $Ag_2CO_3$ is most soluble and $AgI$ is least soluble.
