Copper metal reacts with dilute $H N O_{3}$ to form nitrogen $(II)$ oxide $(NO)$.

$3 C u+8 H N O_{3}($ dil. $) \rightarrow 3 C u\left(N O_{3}\right)_{2}+2 N O+4 H_{2} O$

Copper metal reacts with conc. $H N O_{3}$ to form nitrogen $(IV)$ oxide or nitrogen dioxide $\left(N O_{2}\right)$

$C u+4 H N O_{3}($ conc. $) \rightarrow C u\left(N O_{3}\right)_{2}+2 N O_{2}+2 H_{2} O$
