General Principles and processes of Isolation of Elements
medium
Boron can be obtained by various methods but not by
A
thermal decomposition of $B _2H_ 6$
B
pyrolysis of $BI_3$ (van Arkel)
C
reducing $BCl_3$ with $H_2$
D
electrolysis of fused $BCl_3$
Solution
Boron can be obtained by ($i$) thermal decomposition of diborane, ($ii$) pyrolysis of boron triiodide (van Arkel) method and ($iii$) reduction of boron trichloride with hydrogen. However, it cannot be obtained by the electrolysis of fused boron trichloride. This is because electrometallurgy is used for the extraction of highly electropositive metals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and aluminium.
