Antibiotics are chemical substances produced by some microorganism, which can kill or retard the growth of other disease causing microorganisms.
Penicillin, discovered by Alexander Flemming, is the first antibiotic discovered. While working on Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, Flemming observed growth of mould around, which the bacteria did not grow. It was found to be a chemical, penicillin, produced by Penicillium notatum. The function of penicillin as an antibiotic was established by Ernst Chain and Howard Florey
